copy paste job Posted by: amrosama in Untagged  on

since i began working at my first job(last week), ive been working on sql statements for a dynamically created html form. I spent lots of hard work and time on it , my boss was immpressed and happy till a so-called-coworker clicked on a couple buttons and selected a few check boxes and did my same work in less than 30 minutes which made me really mad and furious.

the same thing applies to already created javascript codes, ajax contols. the web is now full of other people work that other people use and that made programming less interesting, fun, hard and challenging.

whats the point of writting 30 line of code to sort an array if you can just use something like "sort(arr[20],20);", i get depressed from just knowing that anything ill do theres someone else who done the same thing and maybe better.

so is programming turning into a copy-paste day-job!!, if we use other people code why not pay them

I suppose this is why the workforce loves Visual Studio and other types of tools that do the work for you. While anyone could do the same work without these tools it can take much longer which means the companies have to pay more.

Did you boss say anything to you about the time difference between your SQL statement work and his?

he doesnt know much about programming or web development, bosses care about money and time.
he told me that we all must "work" togather with the same tools to get the job done "smoothly", i tried to point out that we will sometimes need to manually write the sql statements but no response

I'd love to see someone try to hatchet together some of the code that's out there from copy/paste. I've seen some truly psychotic SQL out there that I wouldn't trust to tools. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who think slapping together a few code snippets is the way to make efficient code and counts as "programming". Don't worry, you'll find someplace you're appreciated.

In the mean-time, make sure you get that list of resources for when you have to slap stuff out quickly. I know it's annoying, but I do a lot of copy/paste/tweak in my job. I also do a lot of original work that doesn't seem to exist anywhere else.
